Since your federal aid eligibility depends on your household income, the process usually starts with a discussion between you and your parents or guardians about filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Whether they take the lead or you work together, keep these steps in mind for a smoother process:
Collect all necessary documents, like tax returns and bank statements, to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted application process.
Create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID and fill out all details carefully and to the best of your ability.
Add the school code for each college or university you want to apply to. If you don't know the code, you can search by selecting the state and entering the school's name or city.
Submit your FAFSA form as soon as it becomes available, typically on October 1 for the following school year.
Once you receive the FAFSA submission summary (formerly called the Student Aid Report or SAR), check iot for errors and make corrections if needed.
