Part-Time Work

If a job requires less than 35 hours of work per week, it’s generally considered part time. While jobs like these typically don’t have the same salaries and benefits associated with full-time employment, they can be a great way to balance work with other commitments. There’s no shortage of places to find part-time work, including within the Military.

What Is Part-Time Employment?

Most part-time employees work between 10 and 35 hours a week. While this offers increased flexibility, it can often also mean more limited access to benefits — like health insurance or paid time off — compared to full-time work.

Part-time adjunct employees, often found in academia, are typically temporary or contractual. Permanent part-time employees have greater job security and more predictable hours and may accrue benefits over time.

Part-Time Opportunities in the Military

The civilian sector is full of part-time work, and so is the Military. If you’re interested in making an impact through service, there are several ways to do so while still enjoying time to pursue higher education, work on your personal passions, or be present for family and loved ones.

Reserve
As a reservist, you’ll train one weekend every month and two full weeks annually, giving you plenty of time to balance other aspects of your life.
Guard
As a Guardsman, you’ll have the same training obligations as a reservist while serving both state and federal missions — but you’ll still have plenty of time to hold a civilian job, attend school or continue with other passions.

Did You Know?

Many full- and part-time jobs offer the opportunity for remote work — a great way to preserve work-life balance while still gaining experience, pay and benefits. If you’ve got a laptop and an internet connection, the world is your office.

What Is a Job-Sharing Agreement?

When two part-time employees split the responsibilities of one full-time position, it’s known as a job-sharing agreement. Whether splitting the workweek, alternating days or even working some overlapping hours, it’s a great way to allow two people to benefit from the flexibility of part-time work while maintaining full coverage of a given role.
