First things first: Show your work. This can include everything from design projects to reports to writing samples. If it’s a relevant piece of professional material that showcases your abilities — ideally, in a visual way — consider including it.
Ideally, your portfolio should include a brief summary of who you are and what you do, as well as your goals and motivations. This can add value and speak volumes for your work.
The best portfolios tell a story — and the most important element of any story is the way it’s structured. For example, you might consider organizing the work in your portfolio into different categories to show your range of experience or in chronological order to show how you’ve grown over the years. Bottom line: Have some kind of method to the madness.
Cite your sources! Letters or quotes from previous employers, clients or professors can help validate your skills and work ethic.
